  1. Palliative Care is very important in serious illnesses and it can help the patient and family tremendously. This type of care is not only for the patient but also for the family of the patient. It helps patients with serious illnesses to continue to live their lives as normal as possible and focuses on improving the quality of life, not only the body but the mind and spirit. Palliative Care may reduce pain or help treat side effects. I believe having palliative care is important when living with a serious illness because it really focuses on the quality of a person's life.

  2. I had honestly never heard of palliative care before the last class, but it seems really interesting. I think it's especially important in our medical culture where everyone thinks that there's a pill for everything. I work at a pharmacy and lots of people just expect that since it's 2015, there's a pill that will cure any ailment you have. Palliative care is about living with serious disease, which is something we need to concentrate on more. Lots of our efforts go toward curing diseases, but it's great to see that there are ways we can improve the quality of life for those with these diseases in the meantime.

  3. I think this is incredible. I've never heard of this but I'm glad it's available for not only the patient with the illness but the caregivers/family as well. Palliative care helps with the pain, depression, anxiety, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping, etc. in order to help you raise the quality of your life. It also improves your ability to tolerate medical treatments and it helps your caregivers/family with practical support. They even have a little quiz you can take that can help you figure out if palliative care might be right for you. I think more people should know about this.

  4. I believe the best part about palliative care is that it is for all ages. Several care programs are targeted towards one specific group, but this lets people dealing with serious illnesses know that they are all evenly important and respected. Also, having an illness can be painful to your family as well. Palliative care is especially helpful in that it gives care to the families of the serious ill. A study done in 2014 showed that this care lowered the levels of depression the caregivers had.

  5. Palliative care is very important to those who are sick and those caring for them. During a serious illness people aren't going to want to do the things that they normally could do and that need to be done. Whatever that may be, palliative care would take care of it and relieve the patient and the family of the stress. What they need to be doing is taking time to be with each other, not having to worry about other things that may get in the way of that quality time that they may never get to have again. I wish that my family had had something like this when my grandparents were sick so we could have spent more time with them and less time worrying about other things

  6. I personally believe palliative care is very important. After going through the death of my grandma and seeing how much Hospice and end of life care helped not just her but the people around her. I think that this form of end of life care is the best way to deal with a serious illness. Palliative care really helped my family and I am so happy that it did. Obviously death is very stressful but knowing that there was someone else around to help my grandpa take care of his wife as she was dying definitely helped my parents.

    1. Theresa, I'm very sorry for your loss. However, I'm happy to know that you and your family gained some happiness from the people who were there to help your grandpa and to take care of his wife. I think palliative care is very important, especially for situations such as yours. It definitely relieves some stress for the family which is very helpful during these times so that each family member can be with one another.

  7. What I find to be so awesome about palliative care is that it is simply aimed at relieving symptoms and stress. A person does not have to be dying or have a terminal illness to receive this care. It can be given to someone that is having curative treatment. While i think hospice care is widely important, it is only for those with a short amount of time to live. I think that in order for those with serious illnesses to get better, they need to be mentally healthy and have a great support system which is what palliative care largely provides. Palliative care also recognizes that it is not only the person that is sick who is struggling, but also family and loved ones. It can improve the quality of life before someones disease even becomes terminal, therefore palliative care can still give hope.

    1. I agree that it is great that is not just for people who are looking at death. People who are ill need physical and mental support, which is the type of care they provide. Along with the patient, the families are also negatively affected, It is physically and emotionally draining to care for and watch a loved one go through such difficult times. So for palliative care to take on all spectrum of the illness is an amazing support system for everyone.

    2. I completely agree with both of you. It's wonderful for patients to receive Palliative care when terminally ill and those receiving curative treatment. Support is huge when dealing with serious situations. To have this kind of care provided for both the patient and their family is so big in their fight with the illnesses. Sometimes it is more about being mentally strong than it is physically because our brain has so much power. If someone doesn't have the will to live, the mind can affect the time line of a person's life. It's great to know about this kind of care and the positive effects it has provided for patients and their families.

    1. It's nice to know that there is something like palliative care that be utilized at any age or any stage of an illness. When families and people who are ill know that someone is there to help them in anyway they can, it takes a sense of stress off them and they can focus on getting better or if it is the family, they can focus on being there for the person who has the illness. I believe that palliative care is very important to the medical world because it is also available to be utilized with the current treatments that are being provided.

I also found a short video about palliative care from the same webpage as in the prompt.

  9. It’s not easy to watch someone close to you suffer through a serious illness, and I have seen a family member go through palliative care, unfortunately the healthcare team used this care to make her death easier not her treatment. It’s peaceful to know that someone is not in continuous pain during this time of care. Whether this care is being used to make someone comfortable in their last days or to help make their curative treatment easier I believe palliative treatment is a vital asset in healthcare. Not only does this treatment help the patient, but it also alleviates some of the stress put on family members who are caring for the patient. Excess stress brought on by illness of a family member can increase the risk for abuse to a patient, because their family becomes so stressed out taking care of their ill family member. This treatment can also be used for any age patient, so whether the patient is a young child or someone in their 80’s they can all receive relief from their pain and suffering.

    1. I like how you bring to light that the added stress of caring for a loved one can lead to possible abuse. Not many people realize that stress is part of the reason that the elderly are abused. There are other factors that can be contributed such as previous domestic violence of the caregiver, or even personal anger issues. It doesn't matter why the person is angry, they should not take it out on someone they are caring for. Attached is a link for other causes of elderly abuse. Palliative care is there so that the statistics of elderly abuse can be decreased.

  10. There is a lot I did not know about Palliative care and I am glad I am more aware. I did not know that you can receive this along with curative treatment. It is about living a better life with a serious illness instead of providing better living conditions as we are dying. It is available for adults and children no matter the age or stage of the illness. Palliative care also helps the caregivers of the patients. Some caregivers lose their job, take off extra time at work, become stressed and may become depressed etc. Studies show that Palliative care improves these scenarios and diminishes the overwhelming feelings caregivers often feel when trying to care for their seriously ill loved ones. Palliative care is very important in improving a person’s life and focusing on the more positives of life instead of the illness itself. Palliative care is great and very necessary for families dealing with a serious illness, in my opinion.
