This was very interesting to look at. Thank you for posting!
DeleteViewing the inmates’ last meals was very interesting. Taking into account their age, gender and crime, it was intriguing to see what they chose to be their last meal. I found their choices and the mixtures of foods very odd. Then again it is their last meal so they are bound to pick their favorites. One inmate chose to only eat ice cream even though they could’ve had a whole course instead of just dessert. Another inmate refused any kind of food beforehand, which I found was very different. It was very interesting how the article points out that they requested a lot of fried food which is known to be our comfort food. This was surprising because when you think about these people you think about how bad of a crime they had to commit to be sentenced to death and they are deciding on comfort food…who knew they would need comfort…they are supposed to be these evil people that aren’t afraid of anything. Especially not death. Another man denied a ‘special’ meal, and was given the traditional last meal instead. I was astonished when I read everything that is given in the traditional last meal. Many of the others had a lot less food…it really surprised me that the jail is as generous as they are with the last meal. I would’ve thought that if the inmate denied a special last meal, then they would get the normal food the other inmates receive. Instead, they get this gourmet meal that they didn’t ask for. Another odd case is the man that asks for a single olive with the pit in it. When comparing to Victor Feguer, this is the same thing he did. He thought that by eating this, an olive tree may grow inside his body and it would make himself a symbol of peace. I wonder if this inmate had this same idea in mind when he decided on an olive and its pit for his last meal.
DeleteHere is the article about the baby whose body was lost at UC:

DeleteIt is just horrific to hear how our local hospital could lose a baby’s remains. It is so sad and such a tragedy for the family to have not only lose both of their babies but to physically lose the remains of one of their babies as well. It is so sad and I hope the UCMC looks into the mistakes that were made in this event. No family should suffer by losing the remains of their deceased loved one.
Lithopedion is a very rare medical phenomenon, which occurs when a pregnancy fails and the fetus actually calcifies while still in the mother’s body. Too large to be absorbed by the body, the remains of the child or its surrounding amniotic sac slowly calcify, turning to stone as a way to protect the woman’s body from infection from the decomposing tissue. Oddly enough if no complications occur, the mother can basically just go on with her life.

The first 12 minutes is about a lady who had a 46year pregnancy before her body decided it didn't want the calcified baby anymore.
http://www.upworthy.com/7-powerful-photographs-of-terminally-ill-patients-living-out-their-final-wishes I think this is what was mentioned in class the other day! So cool.
ReplyDeleteI really liked this link! I think that having organizations like this is something that really helps people who have come to the realization that they are going to die soon and granting them their final wishes. I wish we had more organizations like this that could help even more people because it would make the world a little bit better of a place and would bring peace to those who are terminally ill.
DeleteMacArthur ‘Genius Grant’ Winners are some of the most humble and giving people. It’s wonderful to hear about a Grant that gives to hardworking individuals to give them some leeway and room to make a huge leap in their careers. They get to experiment with their work without worrying about financial pressure. They talk about how they are going to give back to the programs and people that helped them along the way. I really respect those that give back to the people that have helped them along their journey to success.
